A good car always tingles your senses and engages your emotions. An exhaust can make or break a car. You have things like the Transit Connect that sound like an air compressor starved of fuel, and then you have the glorious symphony of a Ferrari V12 singing like 1000 angels chasing down a pack of thundering hell hounds through an avalanche of fire. Of course my suggestion comes from the Swedish camp. The 9-3 Turbo X has a snarly aggressive note that pops and crackles on it's decent from it's thunderous roar. The smooth V6 burbles aggressively at idle and lets out a vicious bark as it climbs the revs.
So what stock exhaust gets you going? The growl of a 500 Abarth? The soft, low burble of a Suburban? The warble of a 5 cylinder?

That does sound fantastic. This guy owns 4 Saab's. One of us, one of us, one of us!

I always loved how that 9k rpm shrieker in dad's M3 sounded, even stock it never failed to put a smile on my face while driving it.

I'm a sucker for GM 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, and 3.8 NA pushrod V6 exhaust when the pipes are rotted out, mufflers gone, etc. Just sounds so burbly and awesome.

Tesla Model S.......no, I've cocked that up.

Ha! Mr. Godspeed11's girlfriend drives a 89 Cavalier Z24 convertible with a rotted out exhaust. 3.1 liters of burble

Can a dealer installed manufacturer option be allowed? If so, anything with BMW Performance on it. If not, I have to go with the V8 Vantage.

Partial to the E9X M3, although it sounds better from inside the car than outside I think.

Absolutely, the LFA and Carerra GT have to be some of the best sounding cars in the world

Agree

Good call on the Carerra GT. It sounds so hyper and excited. "Can I go race? I wanna race!! Take outside to race! Please? PLEASE?!! RAAAaaaaccccceeee!!!!"

It does sound like a burbly monster, makes it seem alot faster than you would think haha
![]() 11/16/2013 at 11:07 |

Wow I had no idea these revved so high, I'm sure it sounds like a beast inside.

I guess that qualifies haha, the sound of a Bimmer straight six is always great, so long as you don't put an awful resonator on it. The IS 350 fsport sounds awesome too with the performance exhaust

Oh I know!!!! He caught the SAAB bug pretty hard, I actually think the guy who shot the video is the guy I might buy the 9-3 TurboX from...

I think this might be the guy I'm going to buy the turbo X from

Having heard one in person I can say that's an accurate description, it really sounds amazing.

I couldn't agree more. Had a Grand Prix with the 3.4 (GTP on the older models) that sounded great. I have a Buick with a 3.1, and it sounds equally satisfying even with a totally intact exhaust.
Also, put one of those shitty autozone cone air filters on it, and the engine roars when you floor it and it drops a gear. Obviously it's all noise, but it is satisfying.

Best-sounding not-really-expensive car
How about the VQ Nissans? G35/7, new Z's, etc.
![]() 11/16/2013 at 11:45 |

I've always thought the ZO6 with the baffles open sounded the best...

Awesome!
I'm not good with my newer Saab's... What's the difference between a turbo x and an aero?
![]() 11/16/2013 at 11:52 |
|
Or maybe the caterham 620R..... if you consider this to be a legit production car. This exhaust doesn't look or sound emissions friendly :)

Ferrari F12

In 2008 Saab launched XWD with the limited production turbo X. With XWD they could increase power without destroying handling. The turbo X was up to 280 hp and 295ft-lbs over the 255 hp and 262 ft-lbs of the late Aeros, it was 15mm lower and had quicker steering. Then in 2009 Aeros came optional with XWD along with all 2.0t 9-3s but power was limited to 260 and torque was like 270 I think. Exterior was black only and interior had carbon trim and all black leather.

I'm not the biggest fan of the sound but at least the sound haha. So many "performance luxury" cars are whisper quiet. At the tailpipe is sounds good but the interior sound isn't the best, I haven't been in any new VQ cars so maybe they fixed the blender full of marbles sound

XKR sounds great.

only revs to 8400, and 8600 with bpm/ess/dinan tune. (voids certain parts of warrantee)
Also, I believe that peak power is at 8250, and the car only allows you to revs <7000 while cold.

I'm in the "Warble of a 5-pot" camp.
say what you want, but a 5 cylinder jetta has one of the most enjoyable engine sounds I have ever heard. It's up there with the Volvo turbo 6 whoosh, and the GTi idle burble.

Cool! Seems like you know these well. That black one looks great.

Yeah I like those pushrod V6's sound too! Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Infiniti exhaust. Holy crap...no matter where you are, you hear it, and you know it's an infiniti. It's drony, yes, but I just like the tone. It's not really aggressive, but ballsy in my opinion.
The MP4-12C has a pretty mean exhaust too.

Is that stock? It sounds awesome! Especially at idle and pulling out from a stop, it sounds like a diesel truck until it gets up the revs haha, very nice!

If I had kids, I think this would want to eat them. That is flipping bonkers and amazing....the want is strong....too bad the U.S. doesn't get it...
![]() 11/17/2013 at 00:00 |

Yep. It sounds great when you really get on it too. We were testing the sound recorder for this video and had the gain set too high, so all that stuff was distorted. Next time I hope to get a better video of the range and some gurgling downshifts.

False, my dad's 2009 e90 revved to 9000 once the engine was warm.
Source: I drove it.

Awesome engine note, I really enjoyed that car. For as much talk as they get for being slow, nobody ever focuses on how enjoyable they are. Best sedan I've ever driven.
